FDA to speed review of generic drug applications until it’s approved three of them

he Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday moved to try to spur more competition in the market for generic drugs, an effort aimed at driving down prices.

In a policy change, the agency will now fast-track applications for generic drugs until three of them have been approved for a given medication. And in a broadcast to manufacturers about what it’s looking for, the FDA also published a list of about 170 categories of old drugs without generics, ranging from a glaucoma drug to the penicillin antibiotic amoxicillin.
